Review: The Sinister Sweetness of Splendid Academy

Title: The Sinister Sweetness of Splendid Academy
Author: Nikki Loftin
Ages: 9-13
Favorite Character: Andrew

The book The Sinister Sweetness of Splendid Academy is, well, splendid! This book is a twisted tale of Hansel and Gretel, but I personally think this story is better than the original!! The main character of the book is a girl named Lorelei and her brother is Bryan. They go to this new school, called Splendid Academy, and Lorelei immediately finds something wrong – nobody will stop eating!! They are free to roam the halls, go to the computer lab or library, or ditch school, but they have to eat no matter what! You will have to read the book to figure out what is wrong with this weird school!

This book is amazing. I can really tell that the author used her imagination in this story a lot, and I like that.

Review: Keeper of the Lost Cities

Title: Keeper of the Lost Cities
Author: Shannon Messenger
Ages: 11-15
Favorite Character: Keefe

Keeper of the Lost Cities is over-all an amazing book. It’s about a girl named Sophie Foster who realizes she is an elf. She gets taken to the land of elves by an elf named Fitz, who she has a MAJOR crush on. I would go on and on about how amazing and detailed this book is, but then you wouldn’t have to read the book. :)

My favorite character is Keefe, Fitz’s best friend, because he is really funny and makes everything a joke. Sophie also kind of has a crush on Keefe, but not as much as Fitz. I would rate this book 6 stars, but I can only rate it 5 stars, so 5 stars it is! My favorite part of the book is when the midterm’s are over, because there are banners and streamers everywhere and it sounds very fun. If you need a fall book to read, grab this book!

Review: Fairy School Dropout

Title: Fairy School Dropout
Author: Meredith Badger
Ages: 7-9

Fairy School Dropout is one of my favorite books. It’s about a fairy named Elly who hates being a fairy. She can’t stand the itchy tutus, would rather ride her skateboard than fly and messes up all of her spells.

One day when Elly’s little sister was in a box called the Space-Case (You say things to it like fly downstairs and back and it does what you say) she was angry because her homework was not going well so Elly yelled to the Space-Case to ”just go AWAY!!!”  It listened to her and flew into the window of the new (human) neighbors house!

Elly flies after it and soon meets a human girl named Jess. Jess fix’s her malfunctioning wand by putting a pen through it and they become friends. But Elly never thought being friends with a human could make her life so much better.

One day when she was showing her class a spell, the pen exploded and blue ink got everywhere especially all over her teacher.  So she got sent to the head mistress’s door. Read to find out what happens next!

My favorite part was when Elly met Jess.

I really loved this book. Elly seems a lot like me even though she is a fairy.  If you like this book then you will really love the second book in the series: Fairy School Dropout Undercover.

Review: On the Bright Side

Book: On the Bright Side
Author: S.R. Johannes
Ages: 10-15
Best For: Girls
Favorite Character: Jessica

This book is about a girl named Gabby who dies and is “transfered” to a place called Cirrus that is typically Heaven except ruled by the goddess Nephele, not God. She meets her SKYpal, Jessica, also her new best friend. She is assigned to an AM, or assigned mortal. So she’s kind of a guardian angel.

Gabby gets her worst enemy, know-it-all Angela, who is now Michael, THE MIchael, girlfriend. (Michael is Gabby’s best friend and formal crush since, like, kindergarden.) Gabby will not tolerate that.

Read the book to find out what Gabby does to punish Angela and get back her crush Michael!

Review: The Unwanteds

Book: The Unwanteds
Author: Lisa McMann
Ages: 9-14
Best For: Boys or Girls
Favorite Character: Samheed

This book, The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann, is about a set of two twin brothers named Alex and Aaron who live in the land of Quill. At the age of 13, people can be chosen a wanted, a necessary, or an unwanted. You see, at Quill, creative is considered terrible. The Wanteds are sent to the Quillitary to learn to fight, the necessaries stay home and do all the work, and the unwanteds are sent to there death. So one day Aaron was caught drawing in the dirt, and since they were twins, thought Aaron was Alex and turned him in. The day people were chosen, Alex became an unwanted and Aaron became a wanted. As they Alex and some other kids are being sent to their death, an alchemist named Mr. Today rescued them and showed the world of Artime where you use magic and learn to fight. Soon Quill finds about Artime and a crazy battle comes into progress. I guess you will have to read the book to find out the rest!

This book is definitely my favorite book. I love the settings and characters. My favorite setting was Artime and favorite character was Samheed. My favorite sentence is, “Quill prevails when the strong survive.” I give this book 5 stars and recommend this book to 9-14 year olds who love magic. Boys or girls will love this book. Trust me, it’s one of the best books I’ve ever read!!!! I can’t wait for when the second book comes out!
